December 8, 2016
Haywood Regional Health and Fitness Center (HRHFC) is excited to announce the addition of tai chi fitness classes. Tai chi is available every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:45-11:45 a.m., and also on Thursday from 1-2 p.m.
Bill Muerdter, tai chi instructor at the HRHFC, has years of experience teaching and is considered to be a great asset to the fitness community and facility. Muerdeter was first exposed to tai chi and qigong practices in the 1980s and has studied various forms around the country, in different settings and with different instructors. His certification is through the International Tai Chi for Health Institute.
“Tai Chi and effective breathing to me are some of the most powerful ways in which we can personally take charge of our own health and well-being. In our fast paced, competitive, stressful culture, one of the nice things about tai chi is its slow smoothness and non-competitive nature, allowing you to take the time to relax and soften yourself,” said Muerdter.
Tai chi originated in China as a martial art and has now grown to a modern day popular gentle fitness exercise. A person exercising with tai chi practices slow body movements while also focusing on breathing techniques, and meditation. The three basic components of tai chi are movement, meditation, and deep breathing making it a relaxing, and beneficial practice. Tai chi is practiced for various health purposes such as improvement of physical condition, better balance and lower risk of falls, easing of pain and stiffness from health conditions such as arthritis, increased calmness and awareness, and even improvement of sleep and overall wellness.
