Haywood Regional Medical Center announces new midwife joining practice – Jody Schmit, CNM

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is announcing that Jody Schmit, CNM has joined Haywood Women’s Medical Center.
“We are very pleased with the addition of an experienced nurse-midwife like Jody to Haywood Women’s Medical Center,” said Rod Harkleroad, CEO of Haywood Regional Medical Center. “With Jody on board, we plan to expand upon the services of Haywood Women’s Medical Center to meet the needs of Western North Carolina so more patients can get care closer to home.”
Schmit is certified as a nurse-midwife by the American Midwifery Certification Board, She holds a BSN degree from the University of Minnesota, an MSN from Frontier Nursing University, and completed additional training at Watauga Medical Center and Baker Center for Primary Care. Her areas of special interest are prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care, along with normal well-women care, such as yearly physical examinations.
“I feel that empowering women with knowledge and confidence in their own bodies and giving them the support they need throughout that significant time in their lives can affect their abilities to be healthier and happier mothers,” said Schmit. “I’m privileged and honored to take part in those processes alongside women and their families.”
CNMs are licensed, independent health care providers with prescriptive authority in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, and Puerto Rico. CNMs are defined as primary care providers under federal law. In addition to attending births, CNMS play a vital role in an OB/GYN practice by performing annual exams, writing prescriptions, basic nutrition counseling, parenting education, patient education, and reproductive health visits.

The practice is located adjacent to the Haywood Regional Medical Center campus at 35 Facility Drive in Clyde, NC. Services at the practice include obstetrics, well-women gynecological exams, adolescent gynecological care, ultrasounds, minimally invasive hysterectomy, abnormal pap smear treatments, endometrial ablation, infertility evaluation, breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraceptive management including IUDs, hormone replacement, incontinence, pelvic pain, pelvic prolapse, perimenopausal symptoms, laparoscopic surgery, and treatment of menstrual disorders.
