Offers leading edge treatments using state-of-the-art technology

CLYDE, NC–  More than 8 million people in the U.S. suffer from chronic wounds of which healing has been impeded by such diseases and conditions as diabetes, obesity, aging and the late effects of radiation therapy. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of non-healing wounds, affecting 5.5% of adults in Haywood County diagnosed. An additional 12.6% of adults in Haywood County have borderline or pre-diabetes according to statistics from a 2015 Community Health Assessment.

Through a partnership with Healogics, Haywood Regional Medical Center is able to offer a new and comprehensive center offering specialized wound care. Services include wound consultation / evaluation / diagnostic / treatment, non-invasive vascular studies, specialty wound dressings, bio-engineered skin grafts/substitutes, compression therapy, treatment of wound, skin and bone infections including antibiotic therapy, negative pressure wound therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (coming soon).  Patients may also have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials and multi-center studies.

A member of the Healogics™ network, the Wound Care Center® at HRMC employs a rigorous scientific approach to explore, test, find and develop the clinically proven methods and technologies which reintroduce the body's innate ability to heal.  The network comprised of academic medical centers, hospitals and thousands of professionals is committed to advancing wound healing by creating, sharing, and activating wound prevention and care expertise.

“We are excited to announce our collaboration with Healogics,” says Rebecca Nordness, MSN, RN, CNOR - Program Director. “We will be continuing to offer leading edge wound care treatment for our patients with improved healing outcomes and speedier healing times for patients with hard-to-heal wounds while promoting patient empowerment. ”

The healthcare professionals at the Wound Care Center have the opportunity to attend research symposiums featuring noted experts and receive specialized training at the Healogics training facility in Jacksonville, Fla., the largest program of its kind in the nation dedicated to the science of the care of wounds. Despite the high incidence of chronic wounds, a study of 50 American medical schools found that students receive less than six hours of education in the area.

Likely candidates for treatment at the new center are those suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, radiation injuries to soft tissue and bone, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that haven't healed within 30 days.
