HAYWOOD REGIONAL NAMED SCREENING CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

January 8, 2019

Haywood Regional Medical Center has been named a Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) for its ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening. Low dose CT screening for lung cancer carried out safely, efficiently and equitably saves tens of thousands of lives a year.

“We are proud and honored to be working with Haywood Regional as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence. Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved. They are an example to follow,” says LCA President and CEO, Laurie Fenton Ambrose.

Designated Screening Centers of Excellence are committed to provide clear information based on current evidence on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening, and to comply with comprehensive standards based on best practices developed by professional bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) for controlling screening quality, radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

“Haywood Regional is dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care. Low dose CT screening has shown to be the only proven method to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage. We are thrilled to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country,” says Dr. Scott Skibo, pulmonologist with Haywood Regional.

About The HRMC Lung Cancer Program

Haywood Regional multi-disciplinary lung cancer team operates on the belief that the best care can be delivered in a community setting.  We incorporate a robust incidental nodule management program and lung cancer screening program, along with a multi-faceted advanced bronchoscopy program, to detect and diagnose cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages.  The multidisciplinary lung cancer team is comprised of interventional pulmonology, radiology, interventional radiology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, thoracic surgery, nurse navigators, palliative/hospice care, social work, and dietary.  This team meets weekly to prospectively discuss every newly diagnosed lung cancer patient. This allows a timely and personalized plan to be developed for each patient.  Our team is able to offer our patients the most advanced surgical and stereotactic radio-surgical techniques available, in addition to the latest targeted and immune therapies as we have moved into the era of precision medicine.  Our patients also have access to clinical trials both locally and through our partnership with Duke University.
