Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
A 22-bed unit designed to provide an increased concentration of specially trained staff and monitoring, including telemetry. The nurse patient ratio is 1:5, and may be 1:4 depending upon the complexity of the patient. Progressive Care is the term the American Association of Critical Care and Haywood Regional Medical Center uses to define a specific level of care. Progressive care at Haywood Regional Medical Center refers to care provided to patients to include frequent monitoring and interventions provided by specially trained staff. It also refers to care provided to patients who no longer meet admission criteria for the Intensive Care Unit, but need more frequent monitoring and interventions than is provided on the general Medical Surgical Unit. The ICU patients ‘step-down’ to the Progressive Care Unit.
