Haywood Regional draws more than 70 attendees to dementia Lunch & Learn

September 15, 2025

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) welcomed more than 70 community members today for a free Lunch & Learn on dementia at the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center. The session was led by Al Mina, MD, FACS, chief medical officer for HRMC, who explained what dementia is, how it progresses, its impact on families and caregivers, and activities that may support cognitive function.

The one-hour program included a Q&A with Dr. Mina and provided attendees with tools and takeaways to help navigate the condition with knowledge and confidence.

“We’re committed to offering timely, accessible education on topics that matter most to our neighbors,” said Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS, CEO of Haywood Regional Medical Center. “Today’s turnout shows how much our community values learning directly from expert providers.”

Today’s Lunch & Learn is part of HRMC’s ongoing calendar of public education, wellness expos, and community events delivered throughout the year in support of the hospital’s mission of making communities healthier.

HRMC will continue to host educational sessions on high-interest health topics, along with resource fairs and wellness activities. For details about future events, visit HRMC’s website or follow the hospital on social media.
