Haywood Regional Medical Center to Host Lunch and Learn on Colorectal Cancer and the Power of Early Screening

March 09, 2026

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) invites community members to attend a free Lunch and Learn entitled Protect Your Health: Understanding Colorectal Cancer and the Power of Early Screening at Haywood Community College on Tuesday, March 31. The event will take place in the Juniper Building, Classroom 6105, located at 125 Sawmill Drive in Clyde, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM.

The session will be led by Al Mina, MD, HRMC chief medical officer and general surgeon, who will provide an informative discussion on colorectal cancer, including the importance of screening, recognizing risk factors, and understanding how early detection can significantly improve outcomes.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colorectal cancer remains one of the most common cancers in the United States, yet it is also one of the most preventable and treatable when detected early. Regular screenings and increased awareness play a critical role in identifying potential concerns before symptoms develop and improving long-term outcomes for patients.

“Providing opportunities for education and open conversation around topics like colorectal cancer helps empower individuals to take an active role in their health,” said Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS, chief executive officer of HRMC. “By increasing awareness and encouraging early screening, we can help people make informed decisions that support long-term wellness.”

Educational events like this Lunch and Learn reflect HRMC’s ongoing commitment to supporting community health through accessible education and meaningful dialogue.

The event is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided.
