Haywood Regional Medical Center to Host Lunch and Learn on Fall Prevention and Healthy Aging

June 09, 2026

Haywood Regional Medical Center invites community members to attend a free Lunch and Learn, "Stay Steady: Fall Prevention and Healthy Aging," on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Haywood Community College's Juniper Building, Room 6105, located at 125 Sawmill Drive in Clyde.

The session will be presented by Al Mina, MD, FACS, chief medical officer and general surgeon with Haywood Surgical Associates; Sheila Gordon, MS, RN, CPPS; and Kelly Yerkes, PT, DPT, GCS, CCS, who will discuss practical ways to reduce fall risk, maintain independence, and support healthy aging.

Falls remain one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, often resulting in decreased mobility, loss of confidence, and serious health complications. Fortunately, many falls can be prevented through education, awareness, strength training, balance improvement, and environmental modifications.

During the discussion, attendees will learn about common fall risk factors, simple steps to improve safety at home, and strategies to maintain strength and stability. The presentation will also highlight the role of physical therapy in fall prevention, including services available locally to help individuals improve balance, mobility, and confidence in their daily activities.

“Fall prevention is not just about avoiding injury. It’s about preserving independence and helping people continue to live active, healthy lives,” said Al Mina, MD, FACS, chief medical officer for Haywood Regional Medical Center and general surgeon with Haywood Surgical Associates. “By bringing together expertise in medicine, nursing, and physical therapy, we hope to provide practical information that community members can use immediately to reduce their risk and stay active.

The Lunch and Learn series reflect Haywood Regional Medical Center’s commitment to community education and preventive health.

The event is free and open to the public, and lunch will be provided.
