Second annual Mammo Mania puts breast health in the spotlight at Haywood Regional

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) will kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its 2nd annual Mammo Mania, a community health and wellness event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center gym, 75 Leroy George Drive in Clyde.

Returning for a second year, Mammo Mania is designed to make breast health education and access to preventive care approachable and convenient while bringing together local health experts, vendors, and community partners.

Attendees will have an opportunity to connect directly with HRMC physicians, breast care experts, and the hospital’s breast care nurse navigator to ask questions, learn more about breast health and screening recommendations, and receive assistance scheduling mammography appointments.

“Following the response to last year’s event, we are excited to bring Mammo Mania back for a second year and continue creating an approachable way for women in our community to connect with breast health resources,” said HRMC CEO Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS. “Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an important reminder to prioritize preventive care and we hope this event makes it easier for women to ask questions, access education, and take the next step in their care.”

The event will also feature free educational consultations with a certified nutritionist and exercise specialists, along with a variety of activities and local vendors. Highlights will include:

• Pop-up vendors offering permanent jewelry, boutique clothing, handmade soaps, bras and intimates, candy and baked goods
• Kids’ activities
• Free consultations with nutrition and exercise specialists
• Breast health education and opportunities to speak with physicians and breast care experts
• Mammography appointment scheduling

Breast cancer is most treatable when detected early, making routine screening an important part of preventive health care. Mammo Mania provides an opportunity for women who may be due for a mammogram, or who have questions about when screening is appropriate for them, to connect with local resources and take the next step in their care.
