Radiant Resilience Becomes Cherished Tradition for Haywood Regional Breast Cancer Survivors

October 30, 2026

What began three years ago as a special evening to honor local breast cancer survivors has become one of Haywood Regional Medical Center's (HRMC) most meaningful annual traditions. On Thursday, Oct. 29, survivors and their loved ones gathered at York Dining Commons at Lake Junaluska for the hospital's third annual Radiant Resilience celebration.

The event, hosted by HRMC, brings together women who have received care through the hospital's breast care program with the physicians and caregivers who have been part of their experience. Through personal stories and shared moments of reflection, the evening offers an opportunity to celebrate survivorship in a setting that extends beyond the walls of the hospital.

"Radiant Resilience has become an evening that our team looks forward to all year," said Sue Shugart, FACHE, CPPS, chief executive officer of HRMC. "We have the privilege of caring for these women during a very personal and often difficult time in their lives. To come together outside of the hospital, reconnect with them, and celebrate how far they've come is incredibly special. We're grateful for the trust they've placed in us and for the opportunity to continue being part of their lives."

This year's program included moving reflections from breast cancer survivors, who shared their experiences with those gathered. The evening was also highlighted by a special performance from Voices in the Laurel's Legacy Choir, whose beautiful renditions of Climb Every Mountain and You'll Never Walk Alone brought a particularly touching element to the celebration.

HRMC breast surgeon Allison Johnson, MD also addressed guests, reflecting on the lasting impact patients have on the people who care for them.

"When you care for someone through breast cancer, you get to know them in a way that goes well beyond their diagnosis," said Johnson. "You see their determination, you get to know their families, and you share in moments that stay with you. Seeing these women together each year is a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do. They mean a great deal to us."

The celebration also reflects the close collaboration among the professionals who care for breast cancer patients at HRMC. From the imaging and mammography teams to breast nurse navigator Barb Westlake, RN to the hospital's surgeons and its oncology partners, each plays an important role in helping patients navigate their care.

As the tradition continues, Radiant Resilience remains a special opportunity for HRMC to recognize the women at the heart of its breast care program and celebrate the connections that endure long after treatment.

Beyond the annual celebration, HRMC encourages women to make breast health a priority through regular screenings.
