Strong Bones for Life – Osteoporosis Awareness Event
May 3, 2017
In honor of National Osteoporosis Month, Haywood Regional Osteoporosis Center will be offering a free educational event “Strong Bones for Life” on Thurs. May 11 from 5 -7 p.m. at the Outpatient Care Center – 2nd floor. Space is limited – RSVP by calling 800.424.DOCS (3627).
“We have a tremendously dedicated team at the osteo center, all wanting to drastically lower the amount of fractures we see in our community,” says Kate Queen, Rheumatologist with Mountain Medical Associates. “We have ongoing programs and education we want people to know more about.”
According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation worldwide, 1 in 3 women over age 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures, as will 1 in 5 men aged over 50. Osteoporosis, which literally means porous bone, is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced. As bones become more porous and fragile, the risk of fracture is greatly increased. The loss of bone occurs silently and progressively. Often there are no symptoms until the first fracture occurs.
Strong Bones for Life will offer free FRAX risk assessments, which is a tool that allows the measurement of an individual’s risk of fracture in order to provide general clinical guidance for treatment decisions. Also, come receive free osteoporosis screenings and enjoy other activities including exercise demos such as Tai Chi, healthy nutrition for bone and muscle health, tips to improve balance, safe weight training exercises, and safe movement and body mechanics to decrease risk of falls. Refreshments and a build your own parfait table will also be provided.
The Osteoporosis Center offers education and rehabilitation programs for those with, or at risk for, low bone density. The Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center has exercise programs designed for people with low bone density and those who need to improve their balance. For more information call 828.452.8850.
