Haywood Regional Medical Center welcomes new therapy dog, Huck, to support patients and staff
April 24, 2025

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is proud to welcome its newest four-legged team member, Huck – a 115-pound golden doodle with a heart as big as his paws. Huck has joined the hospital’s therapy dog program, bringing warmth, calm, and smiles to patients, families, and staff across the facility.
With his calm demeanor and steady presence, Huck is well-suited for hospital visits, where he supports patients and staff by providing a sense of ease and comfort. His role helps create a more supportive environment, particularly in high-stress situations.
Huck visits the hospital weekly alongside his owner, Kristin Neel, Director of Behavioral Health Services at HRMC. Kristen’s unique dual role as both a behavioral health leader and therapy dog handler helps integrate Huck’s visits into the hospital’s broader mission of compassionate care.
“We’re thrilled to introduce Huck to our hospital family,” said Kristin Neel. “He has an incredible ability to connect with people, ease anxiety, and simply brighten the day for those who need it most. It’s been a joy to watch the comfort he brings to our patients and staff alike.”
The addition of Huck reflects HRMC’s ongoing commitment to patient-centered care. Therapy animals like Huck have been shown to improve emotional well-being, reduce stress, and support healing in healthcare environments.
Huck is five years old and is a certified therapy dog through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, a national organization that upholds rigorous standards for therapy animal training and behavior. Huck joins the growing team of pet therapy volunteers at HRMC, continuing the hospital’s dedication to creating a supportive and healing environment for everyone.
